Baskonia earned a 118-109 victory over Hapoel in a showcase of exhilarating, record-breaking basketball at Buesa Arena on Friday night. Though playing with nothing left to play for, Baskonia snapped an eight-game losing streak to move to 10-24, while the visitors slip to 20-13 but remain firmly in the playoff picture.
The pace was blistering from tipoff, with neither side seemingly capable of missing. The two teams combined for a EuroLeague-record 131 points in the first half, with Paolo Galbiati’s men surpassing their own half-scoring best and taking a 67-64 lead into the locker room. Unsurprisingly, both offenses cooled in the third quarter, but Baskonia did enough to gradually widen the margin and secure the nine-point win down the stretch.
Trent Forrest was the standout performer, finishing with 22 points and 4 assists. Mamadi Diakite chipped in with 15 points and 4 assists of his own in a true team effort, with Kobi Simmons, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, Gytis Radzevicius, Clement Frisch and Eugene Omoruyi all scoring in double figures. Despite his team falling short, Elijah Bryant was electric, recording 19 points in the first quarter alone and finishing with 26 on 9-of-11 shooting.
