Overseas Elite won four TBT titles behind players who have made a career playing outside the United States. In the Round of 8, they leaned on an 18-year NBA veteran.
Joe Johnson scored a 2020 TBT-high 35 points to lead Overseas Elite past Herd That, 93-76.
Johnson, a seven-time NBA All-Star who is playing in his first TBT, made 15 of his 23 shots, including five of his six attempts from beyond the arc. Johnson also contributed seven rebounds and five assists.
“It’s not me necessarily going one on one,” said Johnson. “We have guys who can make plays. I’m trying to set the tone from the beginning and take what the defense gives me.”
Johnson said that his motivation for playing in TBT came not from wanting to get back to the NBA.
“The love of the game drives me and keeps me going,” he said. “I know that my son is watching, so I continue to work hard.”
Frank Session tallied 19 points in the win for the four-time TBT champions, who shot 58% from beyond the arc.
Jon Elmore (23 points) and Chris Cokley (17 points) paced the offensive attack in the losing effort for Herd That, which never led.
Overseas Elite moves on to face the winner of the Boeheim’s Army vs. Sideline Cancer game on July 12th at 6:00 PM EST.
TBT features 24 teams of top professional, college alumni, and international basketball players competing in a single-elimination 5-on-5 tournament for a winner-take-all $1 Million prize. All games will air on ESPN networks beginning Saturday, July 4.
