In the highest-scoring game of this year’s tournament, Herd That kept its dream alive by rallying in one of the most stunning comebacks in TBT history.
Ryan Luther made a layup to cap an 18-point comeback and push Herd That past The Money Team, 102-99.
“We stuck together as a team and kept playing,” said Herd That’s Ot Elmore. “Some of us have known each other since third grade. We’re family. We didn’t quit, and that’s what happens.”
Chris Cokley poured in a game-high 32 points on 12-for-20 shooting in the win for Herd That, which scored the final seven points and closed the game on a 16-2 run.
Jacorey Williams, whose 22 points led the way in the opening-round win over the Peoria All-Stars, had 30 points on 10-for-15 shooting for the Marshall University alumni squad.
“We knew it was going to be a game of runs,” said Williams. “Everybody kept playing with confidence. We trust each other. We just kept playing. We never panicked.”
Bryce Alford’s 20 points paced the offensive attack for The Money Team, which shot 75% from the field en route to a 40-point first quarter. But, Herd That’s defense locked down in the second half, holding TMT to just 37% shooting after the intermission.
“We never got nervous,” said Herd That’s Jon Elmore. “We battled, we took away some of those looks. It’s back to everyone being on the same page [defensively].”
Herd That advances to face the winner of Overseas Elite vs. Armored Athlete on July 11th.
TBT features 24 teams of top professional, college alumni, and international basketball players competing in a single-elimination 5-on-5 tournament for a winner-take-all $1 Million prize. All games will air on ESPN networks beginning Saturday, July 4.
